In the summer of 2022, Pakistan experienced one of the most extensive flood events in its recorded history. Exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, combined with basin dynamics in the Indus system, produced widespread river overflow and prolonged inundation across large areas of the country.
Rainfall totals in some provinces exceeded 300% of long-term averages, and satellite assessments indicated that roughly one-third of Pakistan’s land area was temporarily inundated at peak extent. Environmental consequences included large-scale agricultural land submergence, sediment redistribution, and prolonged waterlogging in low-lying districts, with significant downstream implications for soil conditions and seasonal production cycles.
